As they settle into these chambers, a revelation hits the Sole Survivor, as they watch their spouse and child being against their will just across from them. Once inside and having met the vault's overseer, the Sole Survivor and their family will be escorted into a room filled with odd 'decontamination pods', and are instructed to enter them. Arrangement or distribution of electrons in the orbitals of an atom. Atom comprises of subatomic particles like electrons, protons, and neutrons among which only the number of electrons are considered for electronic configuration. Electrons are filled in such a way that they achieve a high stable configuration.
Atom consists of s, p, d, and f orbitals in which s orbital can hold a maximum of 2 electrons,
p orbital can hold a maximum of 6 electrons , d orbital can hold a maximum of 10 electrons and f orbitals can hold a maximum of 14 electrons.
These electrons are filled based on three important laws namely
1. Pauli's exclusion principle
2. Aufbau principle
3. Hund's rule.
Pauli's exclusion principle
According to this principle, an orbital cannot have both electrons in same spin (half integer spin); electrons will be in either positive half spin (+1/2) or negative (-1/2)
Hund's rule of maximum multiplicity
According to this rule, for a given electronic configuration, paring of electron is done after each subshell is filled with a single electron. In other words, lowest subshell should have maximum multiplicity.
Aufbau principle
This principle describes about filling up electrons in increasing orbital energy.
Example
1s orbital should be filled before 2s orbital since 1s is lower in energy than 2s orbital.
By following these three rules, electron configuration of atom is written.
Example
Electron configuration of Carbon atom
Carbon is a p block element which contains 6 electrons. It contains s and p orbitals. Hence by following the three rules the electronic configuration of carbon atom can be written as
Electron configuration for carbon atom is written as .Total no of 6 electrons is distributed over 1s, 2s and 2p orbitals. s orbitals can hold two electrons and p orbital holds 2 electrons by following Hunds rule of maximum multiplicity.
